IS LIVER CANCER PREVENTABLE?
How can we prevent liver cancer?
Among the very effective ways to decrease the risk of developing liver cancer is to avoid exposure to hepatitis B and C viruses. Hepatitis B is now curable by vaccination. Vaccines for hepatitis B are a part of the immunization schedule for children and adults. There is no vaccine for hepatitis C. Practicing secure sex and avoiding IV drug abuse can cure hepatitis. Screening should be completed for hepatitis B and C as a part of the schedule health check.
Once detected, If you have chronic hepatitis B, you might be a patient for antiviral treatment, which can sluggish down progression of liver disease and reduces (although not remove) the risk of liver cancer. Likewise hepatitis C, suitable treatment can get rid of the virus in nearly 80 per cent of individuals if treatment is started early. Unobserved and untreated, however, infection with the hepatitis B virus can lead to liver failure, cirrhosis, and cancer.
The role for Diet, Lifestyle in preventing liver cancer
Alcoholism causes not only liver injury and cirrhosis but increases the risk of liver cancer. Patients with hepatitis B and C and alcoholism are at very high danger. Alcohol should be consumed in moderation or not at all.
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is now plague in the west and developing countries like India. In this situation, a type of fat called triglycerides accumulates in the liver, which can lead to liver damage. NAFLD can cause cirrhosis and predispose to cancer. It usually occurs in people who are overweight or obese, or who have type 2 diabetes or metabolic syndrome. A sedentary lifestyle with lack of exercise, low fibre-high fatty food diet, calorie, central obesity predisposes to NAFLD.
Food and grains which are inappropriately stored can cause exposure to fungal toxins called aflatoxin which predisposes to cancer.
Can we notice liver cancer early?
Frequently it is hard to find liver cancer at the beginning because signs and symptoms often do not appear until it is in its afterwards stages. Little liver tumours are hard to notice on a physical exam and by the time a tumour can be felt, it might already be quite big.
There are no broadly suggested screening tests for liver cancer in people who are not at enlarged risk. (Screening is testing for cancer in people without any symptoms.) But testing may be suggested for a number of people at greater risk such as hepatitis B and C patients, alcoholic liver disease, NAFLD and another rare liver disease. Recommend liver cancer screening every 6 to 12 months with alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) blood tests and an ultrasound exam.
Ultrasound is a cheap and very easy investigation though it can miss tumours sometimes and is simply a screening tool. A CT scan / MRI of the liver and biopsy may be required for additional distinguish.
Can we treat liver cancer?
Patients with early-stage tumours that can be removed surgically have the best possibility of being cured. However numerous liver cancers are inoperable at diagnosis, either because the cancer is too higher or the liver is too unhealthy to allow surgery. In such patients, novel therapies such as radiofrequency ablation, Radio-embolisation, chemoembolisation, are presently accessible to control the tumour. In selected patients with a higher stage of liver disease and liver cancer liver transplantation is the treatment of option.
Higher Stage of liver cancer has no typical healing treatment. Chemotherapy drugs such as sorafenib and low-dose radiotherapy may control cancer’s spread and ease pain; however, these are of modest advantage in this kind of cancer. Several patients require physically powerful painkilling medicine along with medicines to ease nausea and swelling or to improve appetite.
Save Your Liver By Adding a Few Cups of Coffee
The researcher has stated its findings after 15-year research of liver cirrhosis in more than 4,00,000 patients, and coffee has come out as the best remedy to heavy drinking. It used many investigators, specialists and doctors to get up with their best solution to decrease liver injury, and all were shocked that several simple cups of coffee had the most significant remedial power.
“Cirrhosis is potentially fatal and there is no medicine as such. Therefore, it is important that the chance of developing cirrhosis may be overcome by the consumption of coffee: a cheap, common, everywhere available and well-tolerated beverage.”
There are insignificantly more fatal cases of liver cirrhosis in males than females, and most obvious in individuals aged between 25-34, according to the National Institute of Alcohol and Alcohol Abuse. In the US, nearly 24% of people engage in binge drinking, which causes 88000 deaths per year. From that, around half are liver-damage related.
Does More Coffee Get Your Liver Merrier?
One cup of coffee per day decreases the risk by 22%, two cups by 44%, 3 cups by 56% and 4 cups by 65%, determining that the aggregate effect decreases lightly, but that the percentage is yet remarkable per additional cup.
It was consequently recommended that 2-4 cups of refined, filtered coffee per day would produce the highest results and that any extra cups would have an adverse effect on the remaining body because of the caffeine and acidity load.
How Do I Know if I am drinking much more?
While there is no universal agreement of how much alcohol exceeds the fitness limit, an average of governmental recommendations illustrate that the standard sits at 14 units per week, which equates to about two glasses of wine taken every day or 8-10 grams of pure alcohol. Binge drinking has verified to have harmful and complex damaging effects on your health, with your liver taking the main knock.
The most important symptoms of liver cirrhosis include:
- Loss of Appetite
- Swollen legs
- Repeated Nose Bleeds
- Weight Loss
- Jaundice/Yellowing of the Skin
- Visible Spider-shaped Arteries below the Skin
- Harsh Itching
- Abdominal Swelling
The excellent information is that your liver is an organ which regenerates cells yearly, and can improve from the effects of heavy drinking, which cause liver cirrhosis.
The scar tissue caused by alcohol damage can be abridged and healed back into health, and coffee is the ideal beverage to maintain its path to a fit physical condition. Near about 69% of Americans are undiagnosed with this state, and approx one million people die per year from it.
Diagnosis involves observing symptoms and completing a liver scan at your local health checkup centre. By cutting down the consumption of intoxicating beverages and adding a small number of coffee cups to your day, you decrease the risk of fatality considerably.
Research is still continuing, but the before nine wide studies have exposed that the powerful antioxidants, the caffeine and the superb anti-inflammatory properties contained in coffee, such as kahweol, cafestol, and chlorogenic acid are the reason behind its notable effect on injured livers. By plummeting inflammation, oxidative and corrosive pressure and giving your body a strong dose of circulation-inducing caffeine, your liver has the option to get well from poor lifestyle choices complete over a number of years.

First Ever Pediatric Living Liver Transplant Conducted in the Pune City
Pune: A city-based hospital undertook the first paediatric living liver transplant surgery for a 17-year-old boy. The boy was diagnosed with a rare disease called ‘Wilson’s disease,’ which causes too much copper to accumulate in vital organs. The aunt of the patient donated him the live liver.
The 17-year-old started showing symptoms like constant swelling in hands and feet episodes of nose bleeding and burning sensation in eyes and was later diagnosed with Wilson’s disease.
Explaining about Wilson’s disease Dr Bipin Vibhute, Liver transplant and hepatobiliary surgeon at Sahyadri Hospital, where the patient was treated said that typically, Wilson’s disease is an inherited condition that causes the body to retain excess copper.
“The liver does not release copper into bile as it should. As the copper builds up in the liver, it begins to damage the organ. The liver then releases the copper directly into the bloodstream which carries it throughout the body. The copper buildup leads to damage in the kidneys, brain and eyes. If not treated Wilson’s disease can cause severe brain damage, liver failure and eventually death. Often, an otherwise apparently normal child can suffer from life-threatening acute liver failure in this setting, warranting urgent liver transplantation, “said Vibhute.
Dr Dinesh Zirpe, liver transplant and GI surgeon at the hospital, who treated the patient said, “When the 17-year-old and his family came to visit us, his health was already deteriorating. He had a bleeding nose, abdominal swelling, loss of balance and joint ache, which were symptoms of Wilson’s disease. Thankfully, the boy’s aunt had a matching blood group and she was found fit for organ donation after complete liver assessment.”
“The transplantation surgery was conducted recently and lasted for 10 hours. Considering his young age and multi-system involvement, this was a high-risk procedure. But because of advance precision, he was discharged on the seventh day,” said Zirpe.
