Before liver transplant surgery
Following referral to our program, we will schedule your child for an initial consultation with our transplant hepatologist. This initial visit helps us determine the severity of your child’s liver disease and whether a transplant is needed. We will get to know you and your child and you will get to know us. During this visit we will answer your questions and together determine the next steps for your child’s care.
Once it is determined your child needs a liver transplant, the process begins with scheduling a pre-transplant evaluation. The initial evaluation typically takes about two to three days. We do our best to schedule your child’s evaluation as quickly as possible.
Pre Transplant Evaluation
The pre-transplant evaluation enables the transplant team and other specialists to perform a complete assessment on your child to determine if a liver transplant is the best option. It will include Hospital visits, blood work, and another diagnostic testing.
During the pre-transplant evaluation, your family will receive an education binder leading you through the transplant process. This is also your opportunity to ask questions, get to know the team, and learn more about our liver transplant program
Waiting for a Liver Transplant
After your pre-transplant evaluation, the transplant team meets to determine whether your child is ready for a liver transplant. Once approved, your child will be placed on the national waiting list.
Liver transplant surgery and recovery
Once a liver becomes available, we will contact your family to come to the hospital in case of cadaveric transplant or we will admit day before surgery in case of living donor transplant. It is normal to have a variety of emotions as you anticipate the pending transplant surgery. Just remember that children receiving liver transplants are leading longer and healthier lives because of advances in surgical techniques, immunosuppression, and other aspects of your child’s pre- and post-transplant care.
After liver transplant surgery
Children receiving a liver transplant will receive follow-up care throughout their lifetime. Studies show that when families work closely with the post-transplant medical team, children have fewer complications and experience better outcomes.
